Next on the agenda was the opening speech by the alumni spokesperson Ta Nformi Dr Tabah Milton Taki which was read by Mme Belinda Nfor Finila. He welcomed everybody to the convention who have made the effort to attend the first ever convention of CBC BINKA ALUMNI which shows the importance we attach to our alumni. He thanked the hosting town for the outstanding organization in bringing us together. He equally appreciated the hard work of some of the members who work behind the scene to see that the convention goes hitch free. He acknowledged the efforts our King of Binka whose support continue to inspire us. He acknowledged the presence of the esteem elites and the National President of BINDECA for his exemplary leadership has been instrumental in steering us towards this significant time, we are grateful to your vision and commitment towards the alumni association. He also expressed gratitude to the Binka home branch for insuring everything runs smoothly on the school campus. He reminded us that we are not here to celebrate our past but to create a brighter future for our alumni association. That we should engage in meaningful discussions and foster an environment where everybody is heard and valued. He is hopeful for a smooth convention ahead especially for the forthcoming first ever election during the convention urging all members to participate fully in the discussions and resolutions that shall be presented by the end of the business session. He proposed that we should apply to the CBC EDUCATION BOARD for the creation of a Baptist Secondary school. That this initiative could serve as a vital step towards enhancing educational opportunity for future generations and further solidifying our commitment towards academic excellence. He concluded by pleading that let us make this convention a resounding success.

The history of the school was presented by Apostle Nfor Frederick Budi, himself an alumnus. He started by stating that CBC BINKA SCHOOL is more than half a century and he cautioned that we can’t gather the history of the school in just a brief moment, he said what he is presenting is just the highlight for a particular period based on the research he conducted by contacting some people, consequently the history needs to be tidied and updated and that propositions will be made at the end of the brief history. He cautioned people to listen attentively, that some of the facts could be contested. He stated that CBC SCHOOL BINKA was created in 1949 as Cameroon Baptist Mission (CBM) School Binka. In 1967 the name was changed from CBM to CBC. Until 1957 it ran as a Standard 4 primary institution, before then those who reached standard 4 had to go to Ndu or elsewhere to complete their standard 5 to 6. The first headmaster of the school was Mr Tanyi from Tinto in Manyu Division who was later replaced by Mr Wanki. The school was later headed by the legendary sons of the soil in the persons of Mr JTK Konfor and CG Ngwang to whom the construction of many of the infrastructures and planting of trees around the school yard was attributed. The exploits of Mr ENS Lamnyam of Mbot as head teacher gave a facelift to the school (the list of head teachers shall de updated later on). It is worth noting with appreciation that the land on which the church and school are located was freely offered by the family headed by Pa Tamfu Ntani of Chfumbi. The school has served as the only primary school institution with a complete cycle uptil 1970 to the neighbouring villages like Binshua, Saah, Bih and Mbot. Children from faraway quarters like Binjeng, Bomansuh and Mayo Binka stay with their relatives in Binka to attend school. Some of the first batch pupils of 1949 were people like Pa Daniel Ngayi, Pa Nyugap, Pa Joseph Kwanga and Mami Esther Muyer. One of the outstanding batches is the batch of 1961that pushed a little bit forward and included; Mami Irene Bimoh, Pa BMT Ngala Tamfu and Ngayi Emmanuel all of Binka and Mr John Ngwani and Johnson Mbachah all of Mbot and Mr Ngenge Nformi of Bih. In the early years pupils started writing on sand with their fingers then followed by using chalk on arm boards, pencils on books from class 2 to 3 then the introduction of pens and with ink and later on fountain pens from class 4 upwards. Upon graduation, 3 exams were taken; namely the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), the Government Common Entrance (GCE) and the Education for Christian Living (ECL). The exam centers before 1975 were in Ndu, Binju and Binshua. Pro-curricular activities were very intense and included gardening, music, arts and crafts. The school band was led Mr MJ Karachu who was very severe. Choral music was extra class, after closing at 2:30 pm by JN Nformi and take over for choral practice and pupils had an exercise book for all the music and there were various disciplines of sport. As far as sporting activities were concerned, many shields were won during the celebration of Empire Days. The memories of outstanding performance in the OSSUCS of Bongko Ida are still fresh in our memories with 11 medals hanging in her room right now. The entire football team of the Red Devils under the captainship of Nfor Nyako took the team to second division in 1985 and the captain of the match at that time was Nfor Frederick Budi. The Red Devil Football Club was a product of CBC SCHOOL BINKA. The teaching of hand work and craft was a major activity in the school. Children with talent in craft were early detected like the late Fon of Binka, King Adamu Benchep and was a good artist and musician as well. Kilo Nko Godlove was an artist of serigraphy of world renown. He started at a very young age, Nfor Frederick Budi and Nsagha Nelson Nganyu were also very good artists. Hygiene was a major aspect of the school curriculum. Pupils were examined thoroughly during morning devotion, their hair, nails, chest and their feet and those found guilty were sent home to clean up. The school uniform was green shirt and khaki pair of shorts for boys and green gown for girls. Shoes in those days were rare and wearing of shoes during that time was considered as comparing with the teachers, pupils came to school bare footed even on graduation days. Those who can afford to wear shores were forced to hide them on the way to school and risk losing them by the time they were going back home if the farmers had to burn the farm. Extra-curricular activities also generated income by carrying bricks to those who were constructing houses. The most extra-curricular activity was the annual school hunting for boys and men who joined with the village and went down as far as Funchi, Bomasuh, Mbohreh and the women went to the river/streams to harvest tadpoles. Games like antelopes, deer, monkey etc. were caught and the meat divided in school the next day. A visit was always paid to the Fon to present all the shields won and to give firewood in the palace. Discipline was very severe as teachers whipped the pupils using the branches of cypress and eucalyptus planted in the school. Some teachers like Mr Bongko Big and Mr Njimnto aka ‘Be in Trouble’ were noted for their severe beatings and even in the quarters when pupils saw them, they always ran away. On some occasion the Fon of Binka, Fon KWEFI will come to school to discipline his own children in front of other pupils. Upon graduation many pupils become competent and effective teachers and were recruited to teach in the school. In the late 60s and early 70s, a number of women were on the teaching staff and they included: Miss Nfor Lihmbi, Miss Tabuh, Miss Njeba, Miss Mumbaa, Miss Nyugap, Miss Ngala Irene, Miss Nfor, Miss Edith Nye, Miss Ngansi, Miss Sayani Magaret, Miss Ngala Lefe, just to name these few. Some pursuit their academic quests and obtained higher diplomas and this has been a boost to encourage parents to send their girl children to school. In general, this school has produced many renowned people in different fields like; magistrates, barristers, medical doctors, university dons, PhD holders, and others in the military core, warrant officers, lieutenant colonels and captains, D.O.s, senior superintendent of police, engineers in agriculture, civil and rural engineering, livestock, senior finance inspectors P&T inspectors and international business men and women. Despite these, many fell on the way as a result of death, lack of resilience and determination to face the challenges of life. It is for us to appreciate whether the products we have are commensurate to the quality of the foundation that was laid down and the duration of this institution from 1949 to 2025. If the evaluation is positive, then we can continue with the rhythm, but if not, we have to look for ways and means to stand up against all satanic embargoes visible or invincible that is hindering ex-pupils from excelling. The initiative of putting in place the alumni is laudable and that which has been achieved as a result of this alumnus in terms of the facelift of the school is visible even to the blind. In perspective, let us look at the creation of regional branches where possible and a strong home branch integrating the first generation of the ex-pupils into the platform reconstituting the batches and the repertoire of the teachers that served in this institution in terms and also continue to improve in infrastructure and equipment, provide sporting equipment, didactic materials, a modern band, farm equipment, computers, books for the library, encourage the staff  and the home branch to identify skills in craft, sports, music, science etc. and develop them, assist in updating pedagogic skills for the teachers and allocate annual incentives to the teachers, scholarship schemed for the pupils and last but not the least the purification of the land and if possible a compensation by scholarships up to university level to the children of that family that offered the land to the Baptist Church/school.

Next on the on the program was The History CBC SCHOOL BINKA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION: Successes, challenges and the way forward presented by Mr Nfor Victor Tashing. He said the history of the association started when the then chairman of the PTA of the school Mr Nfor Anthony Gur aka ‘Nfor Batuku’ made a clarion call in the WhatsApp Group of the National BINDECA stating that if something is not done the Baptist Education Board was about to close the school because of low attendance. A lot of people spoke on the subject and one of the people who spoke was Nfor Victor Tashing who suggested a WhatsApp group could be created in order to tackle the problem, Mrs Nfor Belinda Finila went ahead and created the group and started adding people in the group while stating the purpose of the group. The reaction was spontaneous and people started bringing ideas on how to go about it. The members who are found worldwide were mostly ex-pupils and to some extend people who are related to the school either through their parents or others. The group comprised of the head who was called the spokesperson Dr Ta Nformi Tabah Milton, the deputy was Nfor Joseph Nyugap aka Joe Damas, the financial secretary was Mrs Nfor Belinda Finila, the treasurer was Beri Jacky Finila. There were two WhatsApp groups, the general group and an administrative group. A home branch was created to give us firsthand information on the ground about what was happening in the school. The group after having assessed the situation got to work. The PTA chairman gave us the situation on the ground both for the nursery and the primary and how much each pupil was paying as school fees, the enrollment at that time and the state of the infrastructures. The immediate reaction from the members was as follows after assessing the situation on the ground. In the nursery section school fees per pupil was 16,500 FCFA while that of the primary was 10,000 FCFA per pupil annually. The first priority was to raise the number of children in the school and it was unanimously agreed that we should subsidies the fees by 50%.and the minimum a member can give is to subsidies at least a pupil. Appeal letters were also sent out to solicit help of which many yielded positive. The next project was the facelift of the Nursey section of the school, renovation of the entire building, provision of chairs and tables for the kids and teachers and a toilet. These was realized thanks to one of the active and committed members who is none other than Prof Ta Shey Ngwang Emamanuel Njegani how took upon himself to handle the nursery section from infrastructure to school fees subsidies through an NGO called SOMA INITIATIVE. This yielded a positive impact in the school as the number of pupils went above 300 pupils during the first year that we started. After the alumni  successfully paid the subsidies for the first year, the administrative bench had to sit and evaluate and forge the way forward and after deliberation we had to put into project the second facelift which was the infant section and its toilet in the second academic year. The source of income was still through voluntary individual contributions and through appeal letters which we were able to pay the subsidies of the second academic year. During the 2 years period we were able to create the Facebook page of the school and the website of the school which can be accessible to the public. We were able to create the bank account as well. We were holding regular WhatsApp online meetings when needs arise. The King of UKB alongside the National President of BINDECA and his entourage who coincidentally are members of the alumni went and inaugurate the refurbished infrastructures especially during the first year when the nursery section was completely renovated. The payment of the subsidies of the first year was done under the supervision of the National President of BINDECA Dr Andu Walters Ndi. With all these positive achievements all didn’t go without hitches. The then PTA chairman had a lot of problems with the school administration which hindered our operation in one way or the other. He had to take the school administration to court because of the money the school was owing him. The school administration, (the headteachers of the nursery section and the primary section) made our intervention in school be it during the renovation of the nursery and the infant sections and the payment of subsidies extremely difficult. Our representatives at home were illtreated by the school administration and they propagated false rumors that the alumni was coming to take over the running of the school. As a result of this the King of UKB and the National President of BINDECA had to step in to bring order. The church, the field pastor and other stake holders had to step in to solve the problems. To this effect a caretaker committee was set up, the evaluation of the infrastructure that was built by the then PTA chairman, the evaluation of the school forest was equally done to evaluate how much the then PTA chairman spent on the senior section of the school to evaluate what he was claiming from the school as the money they were owing him. As a way forward the field pastor had to step in to see into all these issues, the PTA was dissolved and an interim was put in place. A stakeholder committee was set up including our home branch of alumni. PTA election was conducted and a new exco was put in place headed Mr Talla Cornelius Bibu. The case of Nfor Anthony was resolved that the school will pay his money for the period of 4 years which was close to 4 million FCFA. On our part as alumni, we shall continue with subsidies for a number of years and we shall be holding our conventions regularly to chat a way forward concerning our association. There is a need for an elected exco to pilot the affairs of our association.

Next was the role of the diaspora in alumni association and the development of Binka. The diaspora delegate in the name of Mme Nfor Jenipa introduced herself and brought greetings from the Binka people who are in the different states in America and that she was very happy to attend the convention all the way from the US and hope the convention was going to be a huge success.

Next was CBC BINKA ALUMNI and BINDECA presented by the national president of BINDECA Dr Andu Walters NDI. The president spoke on behalf of BINDECA. He thanked the initiators of the alumni and the organization of the convention. He thanked and appreciated the cordial relationship between BINDECA and the alumni association as a satellite association to BINDECA in order that we can develop UKB together. He remarked that the alumni came in with a lot of force and engaged in so many activities at the same time, like subsidies of school fees, renovation of some infrastructures and consequently that brought a lot of challenges because we didn’t have a road map and everything was so spontaneous; and these included things like who does what and at what level, the church was involved, the PTA was involved, the alma matter was involved, the BINDECA was involved. All these brought a lot of confusion that related to accountability as well. Luckily the alma mater acted fast and involved the Field Pastor, the pastors, Appointed Deacon and during the evaluation so many people had an interest especially in the finances. Faced with all these problems the King had to intervene to put things back on the rail. He gave special thanks to Prof Ngwang Emmanuel Njegani who brought in SOMA INITITIVE that renovated the nursery section as well as subsidies of the nursery section. He said after the projects in CBC SCHOOL BINKA the next steps will be to extend a helping hand to other schools and other development projects in UKB. He revealed that there are about 15 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and a high school in UKB. He emphasized that school is the base of other developments. He cautioned us to guard against a very disturbing phenomenon which he said ‘Do not let your children answer yes sir’ to the children of another in continuation of someone’s legacy. This can be overcome he continued through educating your children to avoid this phenomenon. That we should also identify people with talents and give them a helping hand. He stressed that the initiative of school fees subsidies should be sustainable, that we shouldn’t abandon it on the way otherwise the children will abandon the school and go to where school fees are lower than that in CBC. He said after the convention we should be ready to contribute individually for subsidies of school fees since our coffers are dry since convention consumed all what was in the coffers. He said BINDECA is ready to spearhead all developmental projects in UKB, that he is ready to go home when it concerns development projects. He encouraged us to be development oriented like auto development, community development. He said we should stand behind our king who has embraced the development of UKB. He concluded by wishing us a successful convention and cautioned us recruiting haters to generate amongst ourselves. He equally said he was trotting between the alumni convention and the WISU convention that was equally taking place in Yaounde. It was supposed to be held in UKB unfortunately due insecurity it was forced to hold in Yaounde still by Binka Village.

General Discussions

A number of points were raised from the various speakers which include:

  • Creation of Baptist Secondary school
  • Cleansing of the school land
  • A scholarship scheme to the children of the family that offered the land to Baptist Church/School free of charge
  • The case of Nfor Anthony and the school
  • Relationship between alumni and the school

On the issue of the creation of a secondary school, it was said before the creation of the school there should be a land allocated where the school will be built and that should be the responsibility of the church. The stakeholders were charge alongside the church to apply for the school through the Baptist Education Board. That the alumni cannot engage in such a project. That for the moment we should concentrate on school fees subsidies.

About the cleansing of the land, members agreed that it was a laudable initiative.

Concerning the issue of compensating the family that gave the land to the church/school free of charge, it was suggested that it could be done through scholarships.

On the issue of the relationship between the alumni and the school it was said categorically that the church is the owner of the school and that the alumni is the major financial stakeholder. The alumni were caution about the way they go about involving in the running of the school. That there is a channel through which we can intervene in the school by following the right channels and respecting the school hierarchy. That we should avoid being militants the way we intervene in the affairs of the school. We were cautioned that Binka is a very difficult village and if care is not taken things can degenerate into militancy with its negative consequences.

About the case concerning Nfor Anthony, it was recalled that he was the origin of the creation of this alumni association and that he deserves a recognition from this association and that the alumni should offer him at least a CBC BINKA convention t-shirt. Participants were made to understand that the school is owing Nfor Anothony the sum of close to 4 million FCFA from the building of the senior section of the school he constructed from scratch. The national president of BINDECA came in to clarify the case of Nfor Anthony

He said the divisional delegate of public works and that of forestry came all the way from Nkambe to evaluate the building Nfor built and to assess the forest to know how many trees were cut respectively and after the evaluation a document was done between the field pastor and Nfor Anthony and the amount was close to 4 million and to be paid within a space of 4 years. He charged the new exco that will be elected later in the day to take that as one of their first priorities.

Review and amendment of alumni constitution

Copies of proposed constitution were distributed for participants to deliberate on and make changes.

After deliberation on the proposed constitution, it was adopted pending correction

Recommendations

There were 3 recommendations after the general discussions and they are as follows:

  • About the money the school is owing Mr Nfor Anthony, the new exco to be elected today is charged to follow up and ensure that his money is paid as stipulated in the document signed between Nfor Anthony and the field pastor.
  • About the creation of Baptist secondary school in Binka there should be preliminary studies in collaboration with the technical service in the MINSEC.
  • Concerning the talents in CBC BINKA, proper identification shall be done for future assistance.

RESOLUTIONS OF THE CONVENTION

  • School fees subsidies to be continued every year to sustain the school.
  • The general convention or general assembly will hold every 2 years.
  • After deliberation on the proposed constitution, it was adopted pending correction.

After the general discussions there was a break for food to come back for elections.

ELECTIONS

After a break for food everybody came back for the next important item in the convention which was the maiden CBC SCHOOL BINKA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION election.

The national president of BINDECA was assigned to conduct the election. He announced the various posts to be contested for and that nominations were going to be done for each post and that candidates vying for the posts must have paid their annual registration fees and the election will be done by a show of hand and the candidate with the highest was declared winner for that particular post. He said nominations were also valid for those in absentia. The eldest member of the convention Mr Nsagha Nelson Nganyu the retired soldier assisted the president in conducting the elections.

DANCE DSNCE DANCE DANCE………………….

In conclusion the convention was a huge success from Friday evening to Saturday morning ending with the gala night. Though the attendance was below expectation partly due to the WISU convention that was going on simultaneously in Yaounde, those who were present did their best for the success of the convention. Thumbs up for the hosting town who did everything for the huge success of the convention, starting from logistics, food and drinks, security and you name the rest. Mr Chairman of the Yaounde Convention Nfor Joseph, Mme Belinda and Mme Mercy Yabu just to name these trio for the extra work they put in for the success of the Yaounde Convention. I want to give a special shout out to the National President of BINDECA Dr Andu Walters Ndi  for his humility and  who was with us from Friday evening to Saturday from the Monument, during the convention proper right to the gala, participating in nearly everything and playing vital roles during the convention. To our elders who were in the house you were such a blessing to the convention, thank you our eldest sister Mme Tantoh Eveyne Epse Efouba thank you for your humility. To the Apostle Nfor Frederick Budi you were not only an alumnus, you were a spiritual leader, you are an elite and we were thrilled with your presentation of the history of the school which you made it so fun filled some of  us wanted you to continue. We say kudos to sister Ernestine for her inputs during the convention and the role she played by bringing the convention gadgets (banner, t-shirts and cap) all the wall from Buea despite delays due to huge traffic along the way from Buea to Yaounde. Despite arriving late in Yaounde Friday night, she started distributing the t-shirts right up to gala night. Mr Nyugap Derrick Chuye made us proud by coming all the way from UKB despite the security challenges and bad roads. To our Bamenda delegation we say thank you for making it to Yaounde despite the security challenges. Same goes to Buea delegation. To Douala, Ebolowa, Meiganga and Yaounde delegation thank you so much. Together we made history. We are not forgetting our brother Nfor Nelsson Wanda and his wife who were with us throughout even though CBC SCHOOL BINKA was not their Almer Mater. Last but not the least our sister from the US who despite the fatigue from the journey from America she actively took part in the convention staring from the Monument right to the gala and playing vital roles by bringing greetings from our UKB family in America and the huge envelope she brought from our UKB family in America. God should continue to bless you people richly. For all those I have not mentioned by name all of us played our individual roles for the success of the Convention. Wishing us all safe journeys to our respective destinations and hope to see us all during the next convention.
